PUT THE NEEDLE ON THE RECORD

I WANNA BE ENTERTAINED…!!

Yes, you’ve guessed it, we’re on the Deejay’s case again. Basically, as a tradition, musical entertainment plays a VERY BIG PART in our lives. Most of us rave at least once a month (usually on pay day) but there are those who rave every week even two or three times a week. We go to Clubs, Wine Bars, Parties… all sorts of hang outs. Maybe our taste in music will vary but, one common factor is that when we go out, we are subject to listening to a few men (or women) play a selection of music that is supposed to entertain us. We pay good money to get into these Venues and, at the end of the day, we EXPECT that we’re gonna get our money’s worth…. NO, WRONG!

MOST of the time, WE DON’T ENJOY OURSELVES! But, we may go back to the same venue anyway until we find somewhere else to go! WHY…?? Our Mr Deejay insists on playing the SAME MUSIC, WEEK IN WEEK OUT. It’s ten times worse when and if you go to a ‘Rare Groove or Revival’ joint as it seems no matter who the Deejay is, the same old, tired songs will get played! HELLO… what’s that about..?? Now, I don’t know about you but, BACK IN THE DAY, we used to rave ALMOST EVERY DAY OF THE WEEK and hardly hear the same tunes…!! There were loads of music of every genre being produced in the ‘60s, ‘70s and ‘80s. So, why oh why does the Deejay INSIST on playing the same worn out tunes, I just don’t know!

What we wanna know is where were these so called ‘music connoisseurs’ when we were raving back in the day..?? Did they go to the same Dances as the rest of us…?? They couldn’t have as surely they must have heard some of the ‘other’ songs from the 80 or so albums that Dennis Brown recorded. I don’t remember anyone from back then playing ‘To The Foundation’ or ‘Love & Hate’ nearly half as much as they do now. Sadly, if you’re a newcomer to the raving scene, you’d be forgiven for thinking that (between them) Dennis Brown and Bob Marley only MADE TWO ALBUMS…!!

Now that’s the Reggae scene… it’s even more unfortunate on the Soul circuit. These days, if you go to a ‘Soul Club’ and CAMEO’S ‘CANDY’ wasn’t the highlight of the evening then the Deejay was having an off night..!! HOLD UP… WAIT A MINUTE… CAMEO made loads of hit

singles… ‘WORD UP’, ‘SINGLE LIFE’, ‘BACK AND FORTH’, ‘ATTACK ME WITH YOUR LOVE’… they’ve even done ‘slow jam’ tunes. I don’t really need to go on. And what’s worse is if you complain to the Deejay, they wanna call ‘Security’ as you’re seen to be causing trouble. Excuse me but, I think we should call ‘Security’ to fling out the Deejay for playing crap..!! We’ve just paid to be entertained AND WE WANNA BE ENTERTAINED…!!

And, it looks like this is a very sore subject with a lot of people as over the years, the Clubs have become EMPTY…!! Ok, some may have closed down due to the economic crises but, my reckoning is that because people DON’T WANT TO RAVE TO THE SAME MUSIC ALL THE TIME, they stay home and entertain themselves! Especially when we (the 50+) grew up in an Era that simply burst with good music and because we’ve probably got more MUSIC than some of these ‘wanna-be deejays’, we’re just not having it!

You know what… since the advent of Laptops and Downloads (another topic) … the whole musical entertainment thing has gone down the drain…!! YOU GET ME DOH..?? Maybe not but, what do you think..?? Do you agree..?? What has been your experience…??
